Western Washington’s Only Sportsmen’s Show

One-of-a kind indoor “Steelhead River,” around-the-clock seminars, “Head & Horns” competition, family fun and more showcased at the Washington Sportsmen’s Show®, January 27-31 at the Puyallup Fair and Events Center

Washington’s biggest and brawniest sportsmen’s show--the Washington Sportsmen’s Show® --opens January 27 with a packed line-up of family-friendly attractions, new expert speakers and past crowd pleasers at the Puyallup Fair and Events Center.

Western Washington’s only sportsmen’s show runs January 27-31 and spotlights the one-of-a-kind indoor “Steelhead River,”  over 150 hours of free “how to” seminars, camp cooking demonstrations, the Kid’s Free Trout Pond, the  “Head & Horns” competition and much more.

It’s the perfect time to begin planning outdoor adventures for the New Year (and decade!) with professional guides, outfitters and other resources to assist in making fishing, hunting and wildlife-watching trips a reality.

As in the past, this is a one-stop “buyers show,” with hundreds of exhibitors and dealers offering aggressive show discounts on fishing and hunting gear, clothing, camping equipment, sport fishing boats and RV’s, according to show producer Bill O’Loughlin.

This show features the return of the Les Schwab-sponsored indoor “Steelhead River,” with realistic depictions of drifts, tail-outs and rapids. It’s a truly unique attraction, with  top northwest guides and pro staff representatives from several Northwest manufacturers sharing tips for reading water going after these fighting fish in natural “on the river” conditions.

For those who think that big game trophy in the garage, attic or over the mantel might be one for the record books, the popular “Head & Horns” competition is an opportunity to get it professionally measured—and perhaps “score” a big prize. Prior entrants from previous years’ competitions (including more than 600 Washington State competitors the last two years) and newcomers are invited back to compete.

In addition to the competition, the spectacular “The Legendary Blacktail of the Pacific Northwest” features five world-record Columbia Blacktail deer on display. The huge deer, taken in Oregon and Washington, offer a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to see the best of these uniquely Northwest creatures.

This always popular event and accompanying display is made possible though sponsorship support from Fort Knox Safes, Les Schwab, Ruger Firearms, Kershaw Knives, Danner/Lacrosse Boots and Bushnell Outdoor Products.

Got a hankering for new recipes for the campsite or “at home?” Mosey on over to the Fred Meyer Cook Tent presented by Aidells Sausage Company, Franz, Tillamook Cheese and Camp Chef. Showcasing their camp culinary skills, Cee Dub, Tiffany Haugen and Herb Good will whip up tasty recipes designed for easy preparation—and getting your taste buds jumping. Get there early for a front row seat and samples after each demonstration! Camp Chef adds to the fun with new product introductions and product giveaways.

One of the best ways to pick up free hunting and fishing tips, information on destinations and more is to visit any of the 150 seminars in multiple theaters and demonstration areas, including Fly Casting, Fly Tying, Blue and Green theaters, the Steelhead River, the Warm Water Demo Tank, and Horse & Mule Packing.

A sprinkling of top speakers and topics include Buzz Ramsey, “Steelhead Methods That Work,” Brett Olson, “Tiger Muskie Behavior;” Ed Iman, “Shad Fishing for Kids;” Pat Murphy, “Waterfowl Hunting with a Dog;” Tom Haugen, “Bank Fishing for Steelhead and Salmon;” Dan Brooks, “Moose Calling & Hunting;” Peter Hovey, “Fishing for Big Halibut;”  and Dean Finnerty, “Steelhead Fly Fishing.” Some of the West’s fly tyers share their secrets in live demonstrations, including Arnie Gidlow, Denny Rickards, Pat Blackwell, Kelly Laatsch, Jim Higgins and representatives from Red’s Fly Shop, to name a few.

Attend any of the hundreds of free presentations, such as those by survival expert Peter Kummerfeldt. At his outdoor survival clinics presented by the Western Washington Toyota Dealers, he shares an arsenal of tips for surviving an outdoor crisis, a natural disaster or even a terrorist attack. Learn from the former Survival Training Director at the U.S. Air Force Academy how to use fire, shelter, food, water, clothing and signaling to survive.

The always popular “Kid’s FREE Trout Pond” provides youngsters 12 and under with the opportunity to catch-and-keep or release a trout.  Sponsored by Baxter Auto Parts, the pond is stocked with thousands of trout and all of the materials--including poles, bait and take-home bags--are provided at no charge.

This year the Lowrance Learning Center premiers a revolutionary, hands-on program that gives workshop-goers a chance to learn-by-doing the latest in High Definition System (HDS) sonar.  Fishing experts Jeff Boyer and Jack Fiddleton will introduce anglers to the top-of-the-line Lowrance HDS 10 and give them a step-by-step tutorial on how to use this most recent technology. They will also demonstrate the enhanced sensitivity of HD structural sonar, which makes it easier to interpret what’s up with the new side, down and composite sonar scans.  Sign up for the workshop at the Lowrance Booth.

For “man’s best friend” needs, head to the Petco/ Natural Balance Sporting Dog Information and Education Center for the latest on pet health and education. Dog trainer Dan Mar—an inductee in the National Bird Dog Hall of Fame--talks about basic obedience training tips and techniques in  multiple presentations each day.

For fishermen, the show spotlights its display of sportfishing boats from the area’s top boat dealers. Featuring 2009 and 2010 models “priced to sell” for show-goers, dealers will be presenting a variety of models for use on Puget Sound and the region’s rivers and lakes.
